Due to decades of budget shortfalls, our students have the most overcrowded classrooms in the nation and don’t have access to the most fundamental needs such as up-to-date text books, basic technology or even toilet paper! California once had some of the highest funded schools in the country — we now rank near the bottom in funding with the most overcrowded classrooms and the fewest number of counselors, support staff and librarians per student. CALIFORNIA UNDERFUNDS EDUCATION
California is the wealthiest state in the nation, but we are at the bottom in education funding. California students receive only half as much in school funding as New York. We have 1 million more students than Texas, but 42,000 fewer teachers. Our students deserve a quality education. Here are more examples of how California underfunds public education.
CLOSE THE COMMERCIAL PROPERTY TAX LOOPHOLE
Californian’s commercial property tax loophole allows a very small number of large commercial property owners to avoid paying billions of dollars that would otherwise fund local schools and communities. By assessing all commercial property at fair market value, we will restore $11 billion a year for schools and community services without raising taxes on homeowners, renters or small business owners.
